If you are going to do both boots it better to replace the entire axle.

Usually it's the outer boot that is torn or ripped.

I did my outer boot and it took me about 3 hours. I don't have a lift but I do have air tools. Since you need to remove the lower ball joint from the strut you will need someone to help you reattach the lower ball joint and control arm.

On my 1989 200q i only removed inner side of axle first, pulled it to the side and up,removed outer side by only removing large axle bolt.
Nothing else was removed, just make sure to crack large axle bolt first with car on the ground, raise it on jack stands and remove bolt completely.I believe torque is 147 lb and another 1/4 or 1/2 turn.
I spent about 1-1.5 hours.

Everyone says that the inner joint only moves up and down, and that the boot rarely fails... I figure if I go to the trouble of getting in there I may as well do them both.
I'm taking a proactive stance on many of the parts and systems on this car; even if they aren't actively failing, if they are nearing the end of their useful life I'm replacing them.

Make sure you replace the actual shifter bushing on linkage at the tranny http://www.034motorsport.com/chassis...a-p-20049.html
