Default Dirty Tank? Fuel pump PRoblems

I have been having some troubles with my fuel pump. My old one was getting pretty loud, and making some hessitation, so i removed it. My dad had just retired the 89 200 Turbo from the fleet but it just had a new pump installed. So i changed the pump over to mine, and it helped for about 10 miles, and then it started to get loud and evenetually started to cut out. I did notice that the float was different on the two cars, so i need to ask if the Pumps are different. I also noticed a bit of dirt on the bottom of the tank. What is everyones ideas on how to clean the tank real good? Thanks and pictures are on the way.

If the tank is conatminated with crud, then it possible that either the intake screen for the fuel pump is clogged or the fuel filter is clogged...

Both would cause hesitation and make the fuel pump run harder(ala louder pump)

Replace the fuel filter first because it is easier and cheap to do.

Be careful removing the filter. You have to get a wrench on the filter to secure it or you'll spin the filter and break the fuel line...

If that doesn't work, then remove the fuel pump, locate the screen and cut it off...

Thanks Steve, I have already replaced the fuel filter, and eliminated that variable. I have removed the fuel pump for the 3rd time and this time i drained the tank completly. Are you telling me to cut the screen on the bottom of the fuel pump? What would screen my fuel then? I Plan on giving the tank a real good cleaning befor i put it back it. when I jumped the Fuel pump in reverse, extremly dirty gas came out the screen side, SO i would assume that dirt is my problem> Tell me what you think.
THanks

Yep, remove the screen. It gets clogged by crud and the peeling gas tank liner...

What will screen your fuel afterwards? The fuel filter!

Hope cleaning and draining the tank clears up your problems...
