does the crankshaft have a sleeve that the pilot bearing fits in?

As luck would have it every auto parts store in this town does not carry the bearing
it wouldnt be here until wed. They said thier computer showed the same pilot bearing from 80-89? And suggested maybe someone sleeved the crank at some point. I was thinking of measuring the hole and just matching it up with a bearing they have there. would that work? It looks like someone ground into the hole at one point to get out a stuck bearing sleeve?

046 105 313D - C18x24x16
034 105 313A - BK15x24x26
Both are shown for the MC, and both have the note "see parts bulletin: 1-70, 2/1991"

I just got back from Carquest. It appears that all of the parts stores here list one pilot bearing for my car, and the one they list is the wrong size! I dont want this to happen to anyone else so here are the specs:
Correct bearing:
#F85706
metric specs-
OD=24.00
ID=18.00
Incorect bearing: (the one listed at the local parts stores)
#102cc
OD=32.00
ID=15.00
So if your going to get a bearing from a local parts store keep this in mind.
OR you can get one from Audi using the Parts #'s that Cuatrokoop listed.
Adam.

The 24x18 bearing matches the 046 part I listed...
The other almost sounds like the size of the sealed ball bearing meant for use in the 7A engine'd cars, which has a larger OD pilot bearing pressed into the flywheel.

Depends on the car. The 016 transmission uses a different bearing than the 01E based (torsen type). The 016 is an open bearing (you can see the crank thru it) the 01E is the "closed bearing" (big front lip, tiny hole in the back of it). The latter needs to be cut out, the earlier can use the slide hammer type remover tool.
