I believe that you still need the stock computer for ignition...

Hrm... would totally stock ECU be adequate or does Megasquirt require an aftermarket chip?

Default It would be adequate depending on...

the amount of boost you plan on running...

Would a stock ECU work with stock boost levels on a EFI system? Yep, very well.

When you start increasing the boost is when you'll need the better timing maps of a aftermarket chip.

I'd suggest AT LEAST getting the QLCC chip.

Even then that will only take you so far.

That's the downfall with Megasquirt. It doesn't control ignition.

There are some guys out there messing with MS systems so they will supply ignition control. I'm not sure how good those systems are yet...

This is why the new $1100 034efi system is so nice. You get affordable fuel and ignition in a nice package IMHO...

Default It's a stand alone fuel/ignition system...

The new system is $1100 and does both fuel/ignition.

Old system just did fuel.

Default you definetly want the chip.....otherwise you have fuel cutoff etc...

It's very easy to run more boost once EFI'd. Believe me the fuel cutoff sucks. Feathering the throttle isn't fun when trying to get up and go.

You definetly need the stock ECU as well. Even if you do 034, or megasquirt N spark. It controls a lot of other things.

There are several guys who are running megasquirt N spark on MC1 engines. I talk with one regularly. He says that the sytem really starts to shine once the megaspark is interfaced. The stock audi ignition maps are very conservative and if you have higher octane fuel you can advance a bunch. According to his g-tech the megaspark was worth 45hp or so. His dyno runs showed about 25 at the wheels. I don't know anymore specifics than that.

i'm planning on doing the spark stuff this summer. It's just too damn cold here to worry about it now. tonight's low is -30F! Someday i'd like to run 034 too. It's a very good system. I just can't afford it now.
