first oil change for newbie ( me)
ok, i have no idea what oil to run in my 1991 200 quattro 20 valve turbo. i prefer syunthetic, unless thats not a good idea. i think it has synthetic in it now, so whats a good brand ( hopefully something i can find) and weight?

they say that yes, but I could never go that long. It'd be too freaky for me
I run amsoil 20/50 synthetic at $6 a quart. I change the oil every 3k, but that's mainly because I run it hard for 90% of that 3k.
when they say 15k miles they are talking about "ideal" conditions.....which no car ever see's.

adam's right....
and the interesting thing is, i talked to an amsoil rep ( it's made near here) when i toured the factory and according to them there claim/warranty is not applicable to turbo'd engines. "all bets are off" were the guys exact words. so yeah....

Re: first oil change for newbie ( me)
well, does any normal parts store sell amsoil? i know autozone ( the crappy hell hole where i work) doesnt. and yea, i wouldnt want to keep anything liquid in my engine for that long. i run the car hard about 50% of the time.

OK, if amsoil is out, what's the next best (generally available) synthetic?
If I interpret things right, I may only be "tough" on my engine about 10-20% of the time(still stock 1.3 bar for now, awaiting my 1.8 chip)....

that doesnt meant amsoil is out. it just means dont go more than a regular change interval
without risking damage. If you dont want amsoil go with mobil 1.
your not going to get around the fact that turbo cars cook oil.

IMHO, don't go putting WAY too much importance on oil brand.
Amsoil is Nice. but its not the end-all be-all of oil, least not in my opinion. As best I can tell, oil quality is relative to its price bracket.
If you get something like an AMS, or a Mobil 1, they're going to be similar, I believe. Most brands now have a "top of the line" oil that is full of all kinds of oil helping ****. Either way, If you have a love for AMS, then all power to you, but there's plenty of other options that will work fine.

I run it all year long and I live in upper MI. Some may disagree with doing that.
But the only potential side effect would be the oil being thick for cold startup. Ok, I can see that. but what about after startup.... I want total pretection under extreme conditions. Synthetic 20/50 is thinner than dino 20/50 oil anyway. Not too worried about it.
