Default fixed one problem now another

That oil change fixed the engine it runs fine and the gauges now read better, but when I got home and parked the car it still smoked from the engine but now i hear sizzling from under the car. The smoke is coming from the back of the motor. Probably from under to the top back there.

Default good too hear,

The sizzling is oil hitting the X pipe. have you looked at the back of the motor? But I seen you say that oil is comming out the dipstick tube?? Is that the case? Or could it be comming from the valve cover gasket?

Default Oh...one more thing...correct amount of oil too be used in the V8 is.....

......about 9qts.
But from what you said in your other thread you didn't change the oil filter. The oil filter holds 1 qrt of oil it'self! So if you filled up with 10qts....what Audi originally spec'd for the V8 motor you were WAY overfilled!

Do it like this....
yank the oil filter off, yank engine oil plug...you may/will need 2 recovery buckets...but,
at the point were you have all the engine oil drained from the pan...& I usually jack the driver side of the car up a bit to get most/too all the oil out you,
put a little oil in the oil filter & put some on the Black seal around the filter. Allso CHECK, when you pull the oil filter that you didn't leave the old Black filter gasket to the filter housing!
I all so use a new oil plug gasket...gotten at the dealer.
But button up the oil plug & hand tighten the filter..then use a 30mm, or some channel locks to turn the filter about another 1/8 too 1/4 turn....that will make sure the filter is tight...but not overtight cause when the motor warms up the gasket will form from the heat & cause a seal. So
now you are at the point were you can start to fill the car up with oil. Now I know your in AK & it gets a bit cold, so for you in Winter time I would suggest a 10/40..hey Scott (Mr Goody ;-)
fill the motor up with 8qts & warm the car up..then turn the car off, & do something for 5minutes or so..NO WEED SMOKING ;-P....but go back after & check the level. You want to see the oil at just above the Orange indicator. That would equate to about 9qts FULL!
THAT'S IT!!!
So you end up with a proper fill up.

Default I will look at the back of the motor today.

Should I look around the orange things in that pic? Could under filling the oil cause this? Altho the oil level is correct. I don;t know how an engine leak would hit the x-pipe. Wouldn't the leak have to come from under the car.

Default Ok a compolation of answers.

1) My GOD there is alot of oil on that X pipe!! I would think oil would have to be practicaly gushing out of eather the dizzy seals, flange gaskets, or VC gaskets.
I mean there is oil all over the place....pass side spark plug Black covers.....air filter tubes....TOP of air filter housing...there is even oil in the front bolt hole for the spark plug cover on the driver side.....man there is alot of oil!

******QUESTION******
Is ther any oil on the front of the motor?

I think at this point YOU should heed Mr Goodies advice in the link........

But what I would do is start over again.
I'de take everything off from the back of the motor & clean it down. Then I would crawl under the motor & clean everything down there as well. Basically everywere. Then I would make sure my engine oil, trans fluid, hydroilc oil & coolant was were they are supposed to be at. Then I would start the car & lay under it & wait...wait till I seen a drip...a wet spot...;-P..thats my fav...anything.

Just from the pics...I think now it's a rear main seal leak. But you should follow the links advice.
I wish I could be there to chek on this..it really frustrates me to see this happen to someone who obviousley has alot to learn...but who I can tell really loves the car.

Keep us informed on what's going on.

https://forums.audiworld.com/v8/msgs/124579.phtml</a

Default I think all that oil is from when it was over filled it. How to clean?

should I just spray it with the garden hose? I think all that oil on the engine is from the over fill. Haven't cleaned it off but will. No none on the front of the engine thank god. It was bone dry around the oil drain plug till i changed it and now there was a oil pattern of it being taken from front to back by the wind as i drove it(as the arrow shows). I went back and tightened it wasn't as tight as i could have. I really think that before I changed the oil the x pipe was dry no smoke from down there. It only took 6minutes @ 45mph and 2minutes @ 65mph go get this way. If that is the case then that seems like the correct amount of oil down there for a loose drain plug. Wouldn't it take a long time to burn off tho? Because that is a lot of oil. But how should I clean the x pipe? The only way to lift the car is a jack and you don't get under a jacked car. well now i don't car too much for this car but i DID as always click pic to make bigger

Default Didn't you fill the trans with fluid as well? That's a real easy place to miss

and get it everywhere. Also if you filled it cold to the full level that would be too full as trans fluid expands as it heats. As you drove the fluid could have expanded enough to flow out the dip stick and coat everything including the exhaust.

Ron:
If it were a main seal wouldn't there would be evidence on the driveway for quite a while leading up to this for the seal to be that leaking bad?

As far as clean up I would get about 3-4 cans of non-chlorinated brake clean. It will remove the oil and dry fast so you don't have a flammable issue and it will leave no residue. Make sure that you have the drive way or where ever you spray this stuff on protected or you will have a mess. Don't get it on the finish body paint. Don't use a garden hose or any water. Just lots of paper towells and the brake clean.

Default It's really easy to have the trans fluid overflow on you

because the tube is so small that it requires you to pour really slowly.

I'd secure the car off the ground (JACKSTANDS, not jacks) and shine a light on the back of the engine. If it looks fresh and wet all the way up the back of the heads, all the way down from the distributor rotors (orange things) here: https://forums.audiworld.com/v8/msgs/124593.phtml

Then it's probably your distributor. If it's dry, it's probably your Rear Main Seal.

To clean off X-pipe, spray some Brake Clean on them. Avoid spraying that stuff on hot parts because it's flammable. It cleans really well, but don't inhale it too much -- it causes cancer in the state of California.
