Default Front diff lock

Where on the trans is the lever physically located that engages the diff lock on an 87 5000tq?

I assume it is vacuum operated?

The indicator light comes and goes on and off, I am looking to find out if it is the diff itself physically locking or just a switch down there that is flopping about?

Default if the light works, it's locking.

vacuum actuator is on pass side, above the right output shaft. From there a rod pulls on the actuator, way back, near the rear output shaft (right side..).

Then the switch for the light is actuated by the lock or something, inside the diff... (opposite the lock rod, still on the right side)

So unless the switch somehow fluke works when you lock it, but not when you unlock it, it's working.

Default Well if it's working, I want it to un-work!

It is locking all the time, and won't come unlocked with the dash switch. I'll have to go mess with the thing.

Default If the tires are differently worn...or different tires altogether....

you may have a beggar of a time unlocking the diffs - once locked, the diff will only unlock when unloaded - possibly if you back up and drive forward a bit the driveline may let go of the diff enough.
Cheers!

Thankfully no, identical almost new tires.

Default The lever is there for locking/unlocking and I can move it and it works.

However the solenoid itself is completely missing. Nothing is there at all.

Where is the electrical switch that detects if it is locked? I can lock/unlock manually at the transaxle all day and nothing changes on the light/dash.

Default That's the CENTER differential....

I don't have a whole lot of time, but I have a '86 5ktq that's pretty well stripped, but it has the driveline still.
