Default fuel line trouble....need advise

I have an old VW Quantum that shares the same fuel system as the Audi. My problem is that the fuel line return (I think it is a return line) from the fuel accumulator going back to the fuel tank is leaking. It seems to have pressure on it from time to time. So, it occassionally leaks. It doesn't drip, but produces a strong gasoline smell. The leak is high on the arch going up and over to the top of the fuel tank. I can't reach the leak without dropping the fuel tank. That would be a lot of work.

Instead of going through that work, is it possible to just plug up the return line at a junction where I have a patched in piece of rubber hose as part of the line?

Thanks for any advise.....Rooster
