Default Gunk in the coolant resevoir and hard starting V8Q. Help!!

just bought a 1990 V8Q, very nice car 121k miles. It is that Greenish-tan color with black leather, absolutely beautiful. The problem is, I noticed that it was difficult to start. Keep in mind this car has a new fuel pressure regulator, power steering rack, O2 sensor and seems to be well taken care of. It's about 6k or 7 k miles from needing a timing belt, since it was just replaced at 68k miles about 4 years ago.

Anyways I went to go move it, to see what's going on with the brakes, when it wouldn't start. 3 times I cranked it over for an extended period of time, and nothing came of it. I opened the hood, pulled the air cleaner off, and went to start it again, and then it started. I don't know what that was all about, but I did notice the coolant in the tank appeared to be dark. I opened it up and it looked like someone had actually taken a dump in the coolant. I stuck a screwdriver in it and it was gelatinous. Quite nasty. Is this a blown head gasket or a problem with mixing different coolants?

Anyhow, I'm not really sure where to start. The starting problem appears to be a hot start issue, or something like that, as when I exposed it to a little cool air, it fired right up.

Any help you could provide would be awesome. Do V8q's have head gaseket problems?

Thanks,
Chris

Learn to pull the codes (DTC). Hard start when hot is a known issue with these cars. Pull the codes and see if you get 2112. The code will indicate that the flywheel pin is damaged or missing, but the real meaning is that the sensor is bad. This sensor is used by the ECU to determine when the engine is approaching TDC. This is a EFI (electronic fuel injection) and the ECU is usesd to fire the injectors, there is no cold start injector for this engine.

Flush the entire cooling system and replace the coolant.

DTC codes

I would allso ad a thermostat to the list.
To flush the system theres a pep **** device on the pass side of the rad through the front bumper Blue in color. loosen that & coolant will come out,
waite till it drains & on eather side of the block on the bottom there are 2 bolts that go through the engine block those are to drain the coolant in the block. Tighten the bolts back up.
Then undue the Black rain diverter under the hood & you will see the heater valve take that out & replace it with a "T" connector that you can attatch a hose to. Run the car with the hose on full blast till you see nothing but clear water coming out the pep **** on the rad. Then undue the 2 drain bolts on the block to clear any additional water out. Replace the heater valve & add the proper Blue coolant.

& audiqv8 is correct at assuming the crank sensor is bad. I would replace both the sensors at the same time. Be carefull though I hear they don't make one of the sensors anymore so the connectors will be the same color,
as apposed to one being Black & the other being White (or Grey).
Thanks
Ron
