Halfway through 100q center carrier bearing procedure...

Today for a few hours I very carefully removed the driveshaft from my 1989 Audi 100 quattro. Those darn hex bolts were little buggers, but I only stripped one! I'll post some pictures of the procedure next week some time.
Monday will see the disassembly and replacement of the center carrier bearing. Boy, the old one was toast...rusted, worn, rattling loose. All but disintegrated. I couldn't believe how corroded and worn it was. Are you quattro owners out there having similar problems with the carrier bearing? Must be a common thing.

If the "hex bolts" are what I think the are, you need a 12 point key. I think the suppliers call them VW "double six"

And the bolts were HEX. Incidentally though, Got replacements at the Audi dealership and they gave me those newer 12 point or double-six bolts.
Moral of story on corrosion, clean (Simple Green, soak, hose down) and treat (WD40) the under side of your car frequently. Remove scaley rust.
Still working on bearing replacement. Should be done tomorrow.
