Default has anyone bothered indexing their spark plugs?

by that I mean using shims to align the electrode away from the centre of the chamber to allow the spark to be unshielded from the gasses it is meant to ignite.

Seems like a tweak done to squeeze every last bit out of each spark.

? I use a tri-electrode so I think the benefit would be lost on me.

Default I've done it on a SBC, old Smokey Yunick days....

with the proper tri-electrode plugs it would seem to be very shielded, do these things actually throw 3 sparks?

Default Here's my theory on 3 electrodes

Each spark will jump whichever of the three gaps offers the lowest resistance. The lowest resistance path undoubtedly changes from spark to spark, as a function of gas swirl, ignition timing, etc. This seems like a good thing to me -- sort of a poor man's dual spark plug.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

Was there any measureable benefit?

Default Can't say for sure.......

The best bang for the buck was ditching the points distributor for an HEI with good wires.<ul><li><a href="http://www.theoldone.com/archive/spark-plug-indexing.htm">http://www.theoldone.com/archive/spark-plug-indexing.htm</a</li></ul>

Default There is a reason Honda would concern itself

The Honda theory of car design is to push the wheels out as far as possible to the corners and to make the engine compartment as small as possible. This does not leave room for larger engines. So, they follow the alternative, higher tech engines. 4-8 horse on a little Vtech, is a lot. In any kind of serious competition, it is a lot.

If Honda is really getting that much HP, I suspect a lot of engineering time went into it. Probably including the shape of the combustion chamber. I thing it would take a lot of dyno time to determine the proper "indexing". In some combustion chambers it simply might not matter.
