How do I tell if I have a 3 speed or 4 speed automatic tranny?

I am trying to order a CV axle and I keep getting that question... how do I tell?
I can tell by the shifting that I have 4 gears, but that may be a 3 speed with overdrive or a true 4 speed. I don't know.
BTW: it is a 1989 - 100 wagon (non quattro) with ABS

P R N D 3 2 1 is the 4spd.
P R N D 2 1 is the 3spd.
The US '89 100 did not have a 4spd auto AFAIK, just the 3spd and 5spd manual.

YOu should be able to tell by shifting into D, accelerating slowly to about 50mph and counting the little jolts. The 89 100 will have the 087 or 087e VW 3 speed auto, as far as i know.

P R N D 2 1 is what I have...
The consensus seems to be 3 speed. Now if I could just find someone locally with a joint in stock.
Thanks for your help.

Might be easier than doing the "whoops they sent me the wrong axle" shuffle that my buddy Bill M. went through when trying to find a replacement axle for his 93 100. Nobody could get him the right axle so he replaced the just joint.

Yep, I called thepartsconnection.com $89 plus shipping for just the inner CV joint and boot kit.
The outer was about double that price I think.
But I can get the entire axle assembly at NAPA with inner and outer rebuilt CV joints for a grand total of $59.99 plus tax. With a one year warranty.
Now I know that rebuilt joints aren't as high quality as new, but at that price I can replace them three times and still be ahead, considering I do my own labor.
Also, the core charge for the axle is $62. That is more than the rebuilt part, i.e. they really want to get it back. There seems to be a shortage of Audi 100 axles out there. It may be worth some time to scour some salvage yards for good rebuildable axles, just to have around.

In the grand scheme of things, what it boils down to is 'how long are you going to keep the car?' and 'how much is your time worth?'
The rebuilt axles are usually reground, so if you get a year out of them, great, but the thing isn't going to last as long as an OE joint. But more power to you if money is tight and you just want to get it back on the road.
Have you tried Raxles? Link is below, and they use new outer joints. No personal exp., just trying to help...

http://www.raxles.com/index1.htm</a
