Default How to test vibration damper on crank pulley when off car?

Noticed some vibration from crank pully on 1 of my cars, search found Andrew's thread guessing I have same problem.
Car isn't being driven, so no worries on it getting worse.

I have some spare 5cyl motors around, but they're not in cars. How would I test their vibration damper to see if good since I can't just run the motors?

https://forums.audiworld.com/v8/msgs/83598.phtml</a

Default Re: How to test vibration damper on crank pulley when off car?

if you have a drill press or lathe or router, or any other power rotating tools you can use them. id personally use a drill press. you will need: a heavy object, like a chunk of lead or a chunk of iron (small enough to glue onto the balancer) good strong glue, your balancer, and a drill press or other rotary tool, a silver sharpie, two nuts, two large washers and a bolt

1. clamp the drill press to a solid surface such as a workbench using c clamps or bolt it down.
2. next get two nuts, a bolt long enough to go through the center of the balancer and two washers bigger then the center of the balancer. put the bolt with one nut and a washer through the balancer and then put the other washer and nut on the other side and snug it up. dont overtighten it cuz you will want the balancer to move slightly during the test. trace the outside of the washers with a silver sharpie as a guide (make sure the washers are centered) glue on your chunk of metal and let it dry, doesnt matter where you glue it.
3. mount the exposed end of the bolt to the chuck on the drill press and crank the chuck down so it wont move at all.
4. turn on the drill press and the balancer should compensate for the weight you added to it. run it for about 30 seconds and if the balancer moves from the lines you traced out its no good. any other questions or clarifications feel free to ask me =P

Default ... or just swap a candidate onto the running engine and see if it fixes the issue.

Probably easier and faster than putting together a testing setup.

If you already have the spare parts sitting around, parts swapping is a pretty good method of diagnosis, IMHO.

Default I didn't want to waste effort swapping in a bad, plus when I swap I was going to tackle

t-belt, water pump, etc.. since "I'm in there".

Default Then it makes even more sense to try it out on the engine. You'll have the front end apart anyway!

Try running the engine before you put everything back together, and see how it goes.

Default dont necessarily need a drill press

you dont necessarily need a press to do it, anything that can be bolted down or secured and has a spinning end to it can be used. IMHO the drill press is good because it was designed with accuracy in mind, but even something like a rotary buffer can be used, doesnt need to spin very fast and it can be secured to any surface with clamps or a bracket.
