Hello I finished that wonderful job of putting in a new air filter ( K&N ) for the winter audi.
I went to start the car after completing the job ... no go , try in the morning no go.
Think about it over the weekend .... ah the engine needs to re map it's self. So
what I do is gently plug the air intake nozzle of the air filter box ... it starts.
my question, does a high bi pass filter cause the engine to remap itself or am I
just inventing an interesting story ? If it does re map how long does this take
before the engine will start normally

I don't think the issue is with the filter, or, actually it could be but not in the manner you think [high flow-which, by the way is debatable if you look at independent research]. If the filter is over-oiled it could have deposited oil on the wire elements of the MAFS [mass air flow sensor], screwing up how much air the computer thinks the engine is getting. Try blotting the filter with a paper towel, if you get a significant amount of oil on the towel, pack the filter with paper towels and let it sit over night. The wires in the MAFS are very delicate, clean them with careful bursts from a can of electrical cleaner, don't touch them. Bob

although I am not sure if K&N pre oils their filters before you purchase them. but yes, the oil that is used on these filters after you cleanthem will screw with MAFS. That is why you should not oil them if your car uses a MAF.
not sure if this is what is happenening, but it is a possibilty.

If you don't oil the K&N filter you can drive your car without an air filter, as well. (It's the oil that binds the bits and pieces.) Great sound and maybe slightly increased performance..., for a short time before the motor dies.
Paper filters are cheap!

from what i know thats not true....the oil is what makes it reusable....the K&N filters DO NOT NEED oil.....and they are way beter than stock... my suggestion...dont oil them..they can be somewhat cleaned if you carfully knock them out and then vacume them..if any questions just ask K&N

K&N filters flow well, but don't filter well -- especially when run dry.

http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm</a
