I like the LED features of quicker turn on and virtually unlimited lifetime. I'm just not sure how the 5000's rear lamp control module would like them.

only problem I can see with them is they may not be bright enough for the colored lenses. They are intended for the clear lens aftermarket lights.

The light is very directional, you pretty much have to be directly pointed at them to get the full output. Also they will just light up a red circle on your taillights instead of illuminating the whole reflector.
Not very good looking or very safe IMO...

I have Niterider taillights (each contains 16 LEDs) on two bicycles. They're many times brighter than most blinkies, but most of their light output is within a cone of perhaps 35 degrees. It's visible from all angles, but most of its output is narrowly focused to the rear.
I'm not certain that this would be a disadvantage in the Audi 5000 taillight / brakelight.

http://www.niterider.com/products/bike_taillight.html</a

...this was an idea I've heard, what about drilling holes directly into the back of the taillight, and inserting LED's into there, wiring them up, and sealing the light? Seems like it'd be way easier than the above option...

I think it looks better hidden under the stock plastic lens.
How about making the leds into a pattern of Audi rings underneath the lens?
Eh, I like the idea, but it might be too gaudy for daily use.
