Loss of oil pressure at idle - 1991 10v 100

Good pressure for first ten minutes or until oil heats up. While driving no problems with pressure up around the 5 mark. After a while once stopped and idle down to about 750 rpm oil pressure gauge stutters and then falls to zero and oil light comes on and buzzes. Take revs up to 1000 and pressure rises to the 2 mark. Any ideas?

Oil level fine, small oil leak at oil sensor and valve cover gasket sweating oil. 210,000 km on motor. Engine runs fine.

1. Make sure you're not running a FRAM (scam?) filter.
2. The oil pump has a over-pressure relieve valve. It's a spring and piston...I believe it's under the oil temp sender. Make sure the piston isn't stuck open due to dirt.
3. Maybe the oil pump pickup tube has a leak in it?

Pressure loss when engine gets hot is usually caused by
1. Oil pressure relief spring or oil pump needs to be replaced.
2. Engine main bearings or rod bearing too worn.
3. Fault sender when engine it get hot. (most unlikely)
Try using a heavy weight oil like 20W50 and see if this helps.

I'm going to say either your oil pump is crapping out or perhaps your intermediate shaft bearings (common on vw 1.8 litres that exhibit the same problem) The front bearing wears due to pressure from the timing belt and oil doesn't get sent through properly.
