Low Coolant Temp. (via coolant gauge) and Oil temp. gauge not working. '89 100
I worked the entire day on my car. I found my cat was completely shot. I slapped a test pipe in and the powerband is much smoother.
However, i still have a low idling issue. I noticed as i was test driving my car that the coolant temp seemed quite low, and that the oil temp gauge wasn't working at all.
After around 15 minutes of driving the Coolant temp. gauge hadn't moved past 70-90C. It was around 40 degrees out, so i figured after driving on the highway for 10 minutes it would have heated past that.
What are the symptoms of bad sensors and senders?
What parts would i replace to fix this problem? What part would i replace to fix the dead Oil Temp gauge? Am i looking for sensors or senders??
I have no clue....?
Thanks in advance!

oil temp sender & thermostat
are likely bad, oil temp sender is located at lower right corner of engine, near alt., single wire screws into sender under boot, sounds like time to change thermostat & all Rad. hoses,

My coolant temp is always in the three hash marks on cold days at speed
It's the oil temp that is much more important and gives you an idea of the true temp of the motor. Although the coolant temp is not an unimportant gauge for keeping the head from warping in a overheating situation. You should probably check the connections to your coolant temp sensor and if that doesn't do it change the sender. On the outside chance you could need a new t-stat but your gauge would still read something. Coolant temp sensor is on the left side of the engine under the intake manifold toward the front and runns in a aluminum casting. It is upside down and has two seperate wires going to it usually colored light brown and just forward of the MTFS. Hope that this helps.

I still had heat
wnen both my quattro's had bad thermostats, when I finally replaced both, temp gauge would be just before 1/2 except in very cold weather, heat might have been slightly hotter on thermostat replacement
