Default Narrowing down tranny limp home mode

Posted this on the V8Q list too but figured I'd post here as well:

The other night we drained the tranny fluid and refilled it with 4 quarts per the lists
recommendations. What I now notice is that when the car is cold, it seems to shift at least 1-2-3
without issue. It will also downshift into a gear if you press hard enough on the accelerator
(something it does not do when it goes into limp mode). After you drive it for a few miles, it
goes into limp mode. If you shut the car off and restart, sometimes it will go back to shifting ok, sometimes it won't (I assume a hard code vs a soft code).

If it is of any importance, when it does shift, it shifts fine - very smooth, very quick. This is the same with up and downshifts.

Today I tried to pull the main ecu as well as the tranny ecu in a hope to reset any hard codes,
but within a few miles of leaving the office, the limp mode came back. It shifted ok for the few couple miles, stopped for a red light, and immediately upon accelerating again, the limp mode was back.

Any further insight into what this might be? Any reason it would shift 1-2-3 but not 4?

On the way home, the car got a bit better (about a 40 mile drive), though when I got near to my development, the limp mode came back.

Thanks guys!

Check the ground for the SEM (Sport, Economy, Manual) switch for why the car is not shifting into 4th gear. You could be drivng in Sport mode and it will not shift until after it is going over 100mph.

Put the switch in M (manual) and try driving around and see if the transmission shift manually.

Make a LED test light and blink out the transmission computer error codes.

Switch position makes no difference...I'll check the ground/plug tomorrow or Monday.

Get a test lamp/volt meter or anything that will verify that the lighters are getting power.

There is a Kostal connector that is located in the center console that powered the fr and rear cigarette lighters, rear seat heaters, and the S E M transmission switch.

Sometimes the Audi gremlins like to loosen this connector.

ah very cool! I'll have a look - is it located on top of the tranny tunnel (as in remove the center console), or can I get to it by popping the rear seat heater/cig lighter panel off and access it that way?

thanks alot btw!

See my previous post. With the engine off put the SEM switch in either S or M and then start the engine. Does the SEM return to E mode??

What does your tach shows at 60mph??? Under 3000rpm??<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/v8/msgs/28276.phtml">previous post</a></li></ul>
