Default nasty looking hose

I just noticed a collapsed, somewhat cracked black hose coming of the right hand side of the engine...firstly, what is this hose and secondly, is it okay for it to be somewhat collapsed and cracked looking.

The hose in question runs from the bottom of the motor, just behind the motor mount on the right hand side (a 20v engine), then runs around behind the engine and connects to a black plastic disc thing on the left, rear side of the engine behind the intake manifold. What is this hose? Could it be the cause of my occasional stalling-on-deceleration problem? Any ideas on what a new one of these hoses costs?

That'd be the crankcase breather hose...not sure if it'd cause your issue, but if it's looking nasty I'd replace it [I did on my 200q20v]. I recall reading that some folks have rigged something from store-bought bits, maybe a search would find that information.

http://www.blauparts.com/engines%20and%20transmissions/Audi_Breather_Hose_Pipe.htm</a

You're talking about the hose that starts low on the driver side and ends high on the passenger side of the engine? That's the crankcase breather, and it actually consists of several parts.

I just ordered all the parts to replace that entire system on my new-to-me 200q20v avant. It's the main breather hose, part # 034 103 221AF, the 035 103 245A bleeder valve, the 034 129 101A pressure regulator valve, the 034 133 999F hose the 035 103 447A flame arrester and the 034 133 367C hose that runs from the bleeder valve to (I think) the back of the valve cover. All these hoses are subjected to some oil misting and eventually get mushy and collapse. The bleeder valve runs off the middle of the main breather hose. I replaced this same collection of stuff on my 200q20v sedan some time back. If you price these parts all out from the places like Impex, and then check with Sunset Audi in Portland Audi (check their "Audi at cost" program), you'll find you save quite a bit. I think Impex wanted nearly $300 for all that stuff and Sunset sold it to me for $70-80 less.

Sunset's dealer-cost program

Fun job, yeah replace it, as it collapsed for a reason. Often stall on decel is bad BPV on the turbo cars. The breather hose is a big PITA in my book. It's the blind connection to the junction under the rats nest of hoses under the ISV/manifold/plug wires etc.
