Need help diagnosing problem

I've decided to try and resurrect my 5KS. Tough for a college student. Well, the motor runs but after starting, there's a really loud screeching noise. It's coming from the back of the engine above the transmission and I think it's the starter because it's made the noise before when I started it but it would go away after a couple of seconds. It doesn't anymore. It just screams now.
Should I get the started replaced? Or could it be something else, in which case I'll just get another car (a completely different issue).
Thanks, Type 44 gurus!

You can break teeth off the flywheel and that is $$$$ to fix in labor dollars.
Disconnect the battery, pull the starter, go to the local import place with starter in hand and say "I want a new one".
Or, if you are on the peanut butter, ramen noodles and Taco Bell college student diet (read way poor car wise), take the starter to the local auto electric rebuilder. New solenoid when I had it done on my car was $30 or so.
Good luck.

engine takes a little longer to start than usual. No weird noise while doing so. It only screams once the engine is running. Fluids are okay. Hydraulic fluid is kind of old. But no leaks. Brake fluid needs to be topped up every 4 weeks or so.
I think I can afford a rebuilt starter, Steve. Blau's got em for $130 a piece. Thing is, I have no idea how to pull it out. Will take a look today. Are the labor costs crazy?
