Default Non-Intrusive engine??

I was told that the engine in my Audi is a non-intrusive engine which means that if that the timing belt were to break there would be no damage. Is this true?? (See Pic)

Oh dear! Well thanks for the anwers. Its a 5 cylinder engine, guess I'd better have the timing belt checked as I have no idea when the previous owner had it changed.

Default The popular term is "interference engine."

Check here for more info.

ht tp://www.gates.com/part_locator/index.cfm?location_id=3598&go=Interference</a

Default Meh, my NF broke the cam cog and the belt slipped by around 100 cam degrees.

Guess what, I drove the car after replacing the cam cog, timing belt, water pump, t-stat, cap and rotor for another 50k plus miles.

My NF/NG engine is not the only one I know of that has had something like that happen to it, and it lived to talk about it. What rpm it happens at seems to make a bigger difference, which leads me to believe that the valves float like a biotch after some mileage and higher revs.

Default Some 5 cylinder engines are non-interference; some aren't.

The WU engine in my 1984 5000S broke its timing belt while moving slowly in traffic and nothing else was damaged.

The MC1 and MC2 engines, however, are definitely interference engines.

Audifans used to contain a list of 5 cylinder engines that defined which were interfernce engines and which weren't, but I can't find it.
