Default Off topic: RX7 and clutch not engaging

I have a 1983 RX7. It's been sitting for more than a year, outside.

Clutch pedal is still tight (means clutch is still good). But I can not engage the gears. I can shift even without pressing the clutch pedal. Engine strong, car won't move.

I heard something about linkage stuck, but I don't understand that. Could the experienced ones please explain ? Thanks very much.

Default start the car.

Get the car running, and that will spin the gears in the transmission and maybe cause things to free up. If you have the engine running and it still doesnt ingauge, check the linkages underneith, spray the heck out of them with WD40 or something. Hope you get it working. Good luck!

On those years the throwout bearing support on the pivot arm used to bend all the time. First jack it up and see if you can see the pivot arm moving with the clutch going in and out(car not running of course). If so the pivot arm may be bent. The net effect is that the TO bearing is constantly pushing on the clutch fingers, and it never engages.

Eventually what happens is that you wear through the fingers and the TO bearing drives right into the clutch assy. Seen it a few times. Bang bang

I used to build Mazda rally cars, this isn't new. The two locating pins on the end of the pivot arm where it engages the TO bearing are crap. Rotary Enginering makes a better clutch/bearing, and arm for it.

If that's the case, what would that mean ? Easy fix ? Expensive fix ? New transmission ? Please elaborate a bit more. Thanks.

Now I've just received an email from a mechanic saying it 's possibly a burned out clutch.

Andrew,

got it running just now. Still runs like a slug. Mostly I have to get it to 5000 RPM for it to move. Been running around the block several times to see if it would improve. Apparently, no.

What would you suggest ?

sounds like the clutch is gone, or not engaging fully.

Default Possible

Give Rotary Engineering a call, and price out a clutch/pressure plate/TO bearing, and a pivot fork.

Guessing less than a couple hundred. Just guessing though, I haven't bought one in a few years now.

I replaced the gear oil prior to getting it move ? Do I need to bleed the clutch ?
