off topic, smog check for RX7
Hi Guys,
Please help out.
I found a buyer for my RX7. 1983, carburator. Smog failed. Everything passed, except for HC(ppm) at IDLE speed, showing 131 over 120 maximum allowance.
Been searching, and some solutions: tune up with new spark plugs, cap and rotor. Change oil. Use methanol. Use one bottle of carburator cleaner in a 1/4 full gas tank.
From your experience with smog check, what would you recommend ?
Also, something called ACV trick. I don't understand what ACV is.
Please help out.

Re: RX-7 Smogg check issue
Here are a list of things that you can try...take it to a small smog station and pay them $30 to let you use the smog machine for 20 mintues..
1) retard the timing
2) adjust the fuel mixture
3) Buy a new catyletic converter from Ebay for $60 and install it, get a new oxygen sensor
I don't mean to discourage you but if it won't pass after tune up, carb clean, timing retard and fuel mixture, cat and o2 sensor...... you are screwed...here is what probably need to be done to make the car pass smog.
1) rebuild carburator
2) REBUILD THE ENGINE

Re: RX-7 Smogg check issue
Since the number is so close to passing limit, I am going to try to do this:
Change the air filter to let air go in more efficiently. After all, this car hasn't been driven for a long while.
Change the spark plugs to get it to burn more efficiently.
HC is hydrocarbon, which is unburned fuel. So these replacement should do. I will also turn the mixture screw to lean it out. If only I know which way to turn. The smog station grants me a free retest within 7 days.

my first guess was a new air filter. With a cloged filter you'll get..
a rich mixture which would obviously fail emissions. Other than that it would have to be the cat because I don't think there is an oxygen sensors on that car.
