Re: What do you think it lubricates, it's an insert, tightened in a housing and it doesn't move
Over time youll get water in there due to bad boots and things. I know for a fact that it is usefull for lubrication because when I took the old struts out, they were rusted to the bottom. The PO must have failed to put fliud in.

Tox, we'll have to agree to disagree...

I have seen cars with the worn strut plates (when the bonded rubber separates from the plate) up at the top of the strut _move_ (rotate on its axis)when the steering wheel was turned, so I know it does not stand still.
To each his own, you have your opinion and I'll have mine, I'd still drink a beer with ya if we ever meet.

Re: where'd you get that diagram? - Its a secret ;-)
I'd maybe do a search for "russian" or "family album" or things of that nature. Or email someone.
We aren't supposed to have those diagrams, or the other things that go with them...

Here it is....
<img SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/59697/mounts3.jpg">
This bearing allows the spring, strut housing and insert to rotate.
Otherwise it would eat seals in the insert like crazy. Because the piston would spin before the complete insert would spin in the strut housing.
Pass on the beer but if you have any of those Bacardi Silver 03's around I'm game!

Heres what Scott Mockery has to say about Bilsteins and "lube"
BILSTEIN STRUT INSERTS:
"Most Bilstein front strut inserts have internal bump stops that don't require the installation of the OEM type external bump stop on the shaft of the strut. Also note that with Bilstein strut inserts, you DO NOT want to install any oil or liquid into the bottom of the strut housing, clean out any existing oil or liquid from the strut housing before installing the Bilstein struts."
So there is my answer about the bumpstops at least.
AAlso, looks like the Bilsteins don't need any lube put into the strut assembly.
I'd assume the Boge, OEM shocks could use some...??? Still seems strange to me...
Just some info I found and thought I'd pass on.
Still trying to find that tool and that clunk.

Yeah, I'll have to try...
and get a wrench on the cap from the side somehow...
Wishing I had the right Bilstein tool
I'm hoping that caps the source of the clunk...
