pentosin loss and the "bomb"
other than the "other symptoms" in the archives for a bad "bomb", would pentosin coming out of the top of the power steering resevoir be included? and why? i'm just baffled.

Sounds like the dreaded "volcano" syndrome...
2 possible culprits...
First, your power steering pump has leaking seals. It sucks air in through the bad seals and causes your P/S steering fluid to erupt out of the reservior. Replace the seals or get a new pump.
Second, Possible restriction in the hydralic lines...?
Anyone else have any other ideas?

Re: pentosin loss and the "bomb"
I had the same problem. I replaced the hoses first (cheaper). Bought hydraulic hoses at NAPA and clamped them over factory connections. That worked for a few months. Then it started again. After checking the steering rack and desperately looking for anything but that to fix, I settled on the pump. It was the pump and I replaced it with a junk yard temp. fix. Problem stopped. I tried to rebuild my own pump but I recommend professional help there. Too hard to break it down with conventional tools. The "cross" plugs are easy access but extremely tough to remove. I'd like to hear other experience or ideas here.

Re: pentosin loss and the "bomb"
i got a used ps pump for 20 bucks. they had four audis in the "pick a part" yard. no more leaks.
i kept the old one instead of receiving 5 bucks for the core. i'll have the old one rebuilt. wonder what that will cost.
