Pins in Flywheel?

Pins in Flywheel?
Almost forgot about this. I attempted to turn the flywheel on my '89 100 while I had it out, but couldn't remove 2 long pins that were in it. My dowel pin puller made quick work of the three that align the clutch, but 2 were about 40mm long, thinner than the others, next to each other, and are not used to align the clutch. The puller couldn't get a good enough grip even with the smaller coupler, so I made the decission to just break the glaze on the flywheel with some 40 grit and the D/A sander.
But the question - what are these for? I believe the turbo motors use these for timing/ignition, but the NF?

The three shorter clutch alignment pins (one is partially hidden behind one of the more left of the long ones here) are the ones you pulled with your tool. The really important one is the one on the engine side of the flywheel. It's what the sensor reads.

Re: Pins in Flywheel?
Those sensors read the pin on the engine side of the flywheel and the teeth in the ring gear. The pins the OP asked about are on the clutch side of the flywheel.

Normally not, as it's on the opposite side of the flywheel than the clutch is on.
It's only the clutch side that you usually turn, as that's the only side that ever gets worn in use.

Those pins weigh approx. 8 grams a piece, I debated leaving them off after flywheel re-surfacing....
but at 6000 rpms and 16 grams of weight that far out on the same side of the flywheel, we felt there could be a balance problem without them. I got some metric dowel pins (5 in all) at work and used those to try to keep the original balance. Note how the flywheel has been balanced at the factory with drilled holes near those 2 long pins. Anyway, I chose to replace the long pins after re-surfacing, others choose not to.
