Power Steering Jerks!

My 87 5000CD turbo PS pump cuts in and out. It seems to only affect my PS. The PS cuts in and out constantly....some time very fast while driving which emulates a heavy vibration when turning the steering. The brakes have been fairly hard for the last 3 years, but I know for a fact that the BOMB is dead. I simply unpluged the pressure sender unit to stop the beeping on the computer. Anyhow, the PS pump has been noisy for a while, but I find strange that it cuts in and out. When it cuts in, all is fine...some how, when its time to parallel park, it cuts out...and the car looses PS completely. I check the fluid levels, and they are fine...no leaks anywhere. Is it time for a new pump?? Can there be a stuck valve in the pump, of a faulty hose? Thanks for any suggestion. DJT.
NB: I also heard that rebuilding PS pumps is a waiste of time....they seem to last less than a month....is this true?

I had that problem with my 86, I put new seals in it but they did'nt help. I ended up replacing the pump
I've been seeing used pumps on ebay lately for dirt cheap.

Sounds like air in the lines.
Try the lock-to-lock cycle with the steering wheel a few times.
If that doesn't work I would suspect the valve body in the rack more than the pump.

sounds like your are intermittantly loosing pressure within your P/S system. I would suspect problems with the pump. Cheapest and easiest thing to do first is to replace the pump. Gotta think that will cure your problem.

I know this is a very basic suggestion but, make sure your PS belt is on tight. It could simply be slipping. I always start with simple basic items first when I (try) diagnose a problem on the car.
