the shifter is actually popping out of 3rd gear.
I happened to look down today and saw it pop out of gear.. This would explain why the shifter travel doesn't feel too different.
another interesting point. Prior to getting my clutch replaced 2nd gear used to do this and now 2nd gear feels great. For this reason I must assume the linkage has somehow moved to make the throw to 3rd gear slightly too short.
I must lean towards a shift linkage issue but have no idea how to adjust even after looking at bentley.

Shifter "length" adjustment is above the center diff. It's really difficult to get to... Long extension and 13mm socket, then you have to get a wrench on the topside to stop bolt from spinning. Rod and "mate are" splined, adjust appropriatly and see if that helps.
Need to check out the Bentley... If you don't have one i'll check tommorrow.

The shift boot on the 20020v cars is leather with a rubber lining. Over the years the rubber lining separates and droops enough to interfer with shifting.
I took off the shift boot and cut off the rubber liner.
Now the shift action is crisp and precise and practically effortless. From the time I bought the car 6 or 7 years ago, the shifting never felt so good.
IMO, Everyone should cut that rubber boot off.
