Purolator PureOne oil filter
Does anyone on the list use this brand of oil filter?
How does it compare to OEM, Bosch and Mann filters? One thing I do know is that many Mann filters are made in the same Purolator factory which is in of all palces - India!<ul><li><a href="http://www.pureoil.com/pureone.htm">http://www.pureoil.com/pureone.htm</a</li></ul>

Does oil filter quality really vary?????
In this day and age, I think it is impossible to buy a bad oil filter. My old VW with the Audi 5 cylinder motor is nearing 300K miles with only a single valve job. I have put many different brands (Fram, AC, STP, Auto Zone's Deutch, Lee, Walmart's Super Tech) equivalent to the size PH2870A on that old VW. (The same size fits my '86 5K.) They all fit well, none ever leaked. Just remember to change oil at about every 3K miles. My old VW still burns very little oil, so I think all those different oil filters, and store brand oil did their job. Buying some oil filter just because it is from Germany doesn't make any sense to me. Just my 2 cents.....Rooster

Re: Does oil filter quality really vary?????
Apparently, some members on this forum have experienced ruptured filters which were not OEM, Bosch or Mann. The Audi 5 cyl. engines' oil pumps are said to work at higher pressures and flow rates than most other makes.

yes filter quality does matter cut a fram filter apart some time and see what is in it not much then cut an OE or other good quality filter and see what is in it. Always use a good quality filter, pure one in my book is an excelent filter used them for years on other cars after 3000 miles oil was still clean on a 120,000 mi vw

Yes I had a problem with...
a burst filter shortly after I purchased my 88 5KS...
What a nightmare!
Since I didn't take a picture of the burst filter I don't have any proof that it was faulty.
Because of this fact, I won't mention the filter brand name.
However, I have a feeling most of you will know which brand I'm refering to...
I've used Mann and Mahle filters since with no incidents.

I respectfully disagree...
Just like I will not put convenience store oil into my engine, I will not put one of those "it fits, so it must be okay" oil filters on my engine.
See the link below for a review of popular filters, there is quite a difference!
The Fram Superguard filters are even impregnated with Teflon, the same stuff that Dupont says do not put in your engine. I guess the Fram engineers didn't see the FTC ruling against Slick 50 for claiming Teflon would help your engine last forever and ever.
Besides, in my area the Mann filters are $5 to $6, and the el cheapo Fram without the anti-drainback valve is $4. I feel much more comfortable spending the extra dollar or so for my Audi.<ul><li><a href="http://minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html">http://minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html</a</li></ul>
