If I turn on the radio, and no sign of electricty coming in, is that because power is disconnected ? Or because of some wrong code ? I heard the newer Audi has codes in the radio unit that probably need to be enter. Is that true ? I am going in plunge in and work on the radio on an 87 CSTQ.

Appreciate any guidance here.
I could remove the holding cover around the climate control panel. There were four screws there that I removed. But things are leading to some ways to remove the radio unit. Where do I go from here ? Do I remove the cover of the center console ? If so how ?
So far, four screws that holds the climate control unit, that the plastice under the steering wheel to help reach to the back of the radio.
Thanks all.
edit:
I removed the radio last night. Had to find a way to reach to the back to remove a screw. Boy, any radio thief who wants to break in to steal these radio must be a nutcase. No wonder they don't break in. It was the fuse by the way.

If it is an 87, I don't think that it has anti-thieft technology requiring programming. I seem to remember that Audi started that a few years later. Since you are not getting power to the raidio, I would first check for a bad fuse at the fuse block. If fuse ok, then I would consider replacing the radio. Audi OEM standard issue radios weren't very good. They had low power output and poor tuning performance. For not much money, it is far better to install a radio with CD player.
Drop me a note on what trim to remove, to remove the radio. It is not difficult.

The '88+ B-series cars got coded radios from Weisbaden (appear to be Blaupunkts actually).
Not sure if the '88 5k series got them too?
The older Audi Design radios were un-coded units, and as Rooster said rather poor.
BTW, there may be a fuse on the back of the OE deck besides the one in the fuse/relay panel under the hood.
