Default random gas smell in 1990 audi 100

every once in a while i will get a strong odor of gas which i think is coming from the rear of the car. i see no leaks around the tank and if i open the trunk it smells fine. i am thinking it may be the fuel pump access on top of the tank but wouldn't the trunk smell too? anyone ever have this problem? funny story, a couple of weeks ago one of my buddies who owns a 2005 vw golf drove the old audi after i had a few too many beers and praised the car for its luxery and driveability, and it would be so much better to own than his golf, i couldn't agree more!!!

Probably the beginnings of either a fuel tank or a fuel line leak.

Every time that started on one of our Audis, it ended up developing a leak.

In fact, I have one of our V8s on the hoist right now getting ready to fix a little leak that suddently became substantial--rotted fuel line.

Default Yeah I have a leak to track down in my V8 as well

Only seems to leak on a full tank so I'll be checking out the top cover, hopefully that's it.

Could be the O-Ring that seals the access opening or the flexible hose connection of the filler pipe to the tank. Does it still leak after you've driven 20-30 miles? If so, more likely the seam where the top and bottom halves of the tank are welded together. There's a lip all around the tank at that juncture that gathers crud and gets rusty.

Default I've stopped topping it up, seems to not happen when only 3/4 full

so I'm hoping it's the O-ring (fingers crossed). I can see gas dripping down the front of the spare tire well underneath the car when it leaks but can't quite see where it's coming from.

Default Same thing on the V8 I just picked up. Leakes were the two halfs meet

on the driver side....rite above were the mid muffler would be.

You might be able to repair it with a sealer of some kind. If it were my car I would replace the tank.
