Default rear strut problems 1990Qv8

Just replaced rear struts, both were shot..I'm still getting a little clunk from them..They are pleanty tight..Is there a bearing that I need to change? Anybody got a exploded view of 1990 Qv8 rears? The clunk was much worse with the bad struts, it is quieter now, but something still seems loose with them..I did all kinds of checks and it is for sure the struts..any ideas? Thanks!!

Chances are it's the track links.

and here are some other bushing /flex points to look at:

Scott, thanks for the info..I need to look into that stuff too.. This problem I pretty positive is still the strut, when I push down on the car as an assistant looks at the strut the motion and sound are fluid with one another. It's like the strut cannot be tightened enough to not move..I know strut bearings on some us cars fail and are a quick fix. I tightened them up real good and the noise lessened, but I cannot tighten any more. Is it possible that one of the rubber parts have given up?

Certainly possible. but for the rear's not too likely.

When you push the car down (and the strut compresses), the top of the wheel flexes inward putting stress on the outter bushing on the track link.

Chances are that is what your hearing. It's a very common problem, where the upper strut bearing is not. I'd start there.

Default Agree with Scott :-)

Those thing's are a menace! Seem's like I've replaced these links on one or another Audi at least every 2 years!
Allso the bushings right under each rear door, bolted to the frame rails are notorious for causeing clunks, as are the rear bushings in the trailing arms.
The nut for the shock top's only supposed to be torqued down to like 15ft lbs.

Check those camber links. I got a new set on e-bay for $100 for the pair. & what kinda shocks you use again??

I found an exploded view of the struts and noticed a part they call a ring is not there. Looks like a large washer..never was in there..I'm wondering if this is causing a gapping problem not allowing the strut to seat all the way.. I'm gonna check with and without the links hooked up..This thing is driving me nuts..

Default Don't do that..

That link is what's holding the top of the wheel straight. If you remove it and set the weight of the wheel on the car, it'll just fold in, and hurt something.

The track links like Ron said are on Ebay right now for $99.00 for the pair (or up can pay 66.00 each ;-) ) from a other sources.

As for the bushings and things, I'd start with SJM's site, or Autohausaz. If they don't have it, it's off to the dealer..sorry.. welcome to V8 ownership.
