Runs for a minute, then sputters and dies.
Hey guys, I just picked up an 86 5000cs Turbo last week. I cannot figure out why it will only run for a minute or so then sputter out till it dies. I thought that it wasn't getting enough fuel, but I just replaced the fuel filter in the engine compartment. Something else that I think is interesting. I looked in the air filter box and there is oil in there. There is also oil coated on the mass air plate.
Any help would be appreciated.

It seems like it dies when it is warming up. If I rev the engine it will rev pretty smoothly. Until it warms up a bit then it chokes out and dies.

I've been working with this problem with my'86 5kt with no solution. Car runs perfect until engine reaches operating temp, then it's undrivable. I've since bought another 5000 (quattro this time). But it's not turbo so I want this engine to run.
Is your car a cs turbo with an automatic trans? Check the operation of the two temp sensors at the front of the block on upper radiator hose housing.
The oil is no big deal if it isn't dripping. A light film will be present as the seal in your turbo wears out. If your car is non turbo check the positive crankcase pressure. Old vw's used to suck oil if the pcv was plugged.

It is in fact a CS Turbo. The temperature doesn't register on the dash readout. I'm guessing that the CTS is bad. But, would that cause the sputtering and dieing? If the engine is cold, it takes longer to sputter and die. Once it has died, it only runs for 30 seconds or so.

Thanks to all who posted. I replaced the fuel filter. Next I took the screen off the bottom of the fuel pump (an Audi TSB). Finally, I found a vacuum leak. Whoever had the vehicle before me, tried to patch a hose to air meter connection. Found that it had been leaking once the hose got warm. Needs a tuneup, but it runs strong. Plus, the oil leakage from the turbo has reduced.
I'll be doing a motor swap from this 5000 to my 1988 90 non/Q. I was told that the MC engine is a direct bolt on. (Fingers crossed).
