Default Seeking BTDT on fixing sagging headliner

As the title states, I would like to know how some of you have repaired sagging headliners on your Type 44's. Mine has just started drooping down in the rear passenger side.

Just started? I did mine 4 yrs ago, looks great too but a little tricky. If I can remember (haha yea I do forget!) In short, I removed the whole shell which means all the hard wear, like dome lights, sunroof assy, visors etc. Pretty involved, don't think its a one day job. The 'cardboard' shell is very dry and fragile, it may crack. Can be fixed later. Use fiberglas screen and liquid nails construction adhesive. I was tempted to cover the sunroof inside but I didn't. Very important.. the thickness of the foam covered cloth is too thick and my sunroof is superslow when opening and closing. Maybe shave the foam off the cloth at these areas. I sripped off the old glue so it wouldn't fall off again but the headliner/upolstry guy, that glued it, said I didn't have to. I think he just sanded the shell when he glued the foam cloth on the shell of my 93 Cherokee. A liitle lumpy but still holding up for 2 years. Don't even try regluing the old liner, just a wast of time and looks crapy (and faded). it's a great feeling when your are done. Oh yea, make sure rain is not in the forcast for a few days. I put a plastic tarp over and the 'swimming pool' burst all over my fine leather seats! Sorry so long a post.

I removed the complete headliner, stripped all of the foam and adhesive from it. I then covered it with a 2 step textured spray paint to match the interior colors. Reinstalled and it looks great with no reoccurring droop. It is tough to get the formed cardboard headliner shell out of the car with out damage but it can be done. The whole process can be done in a weekend. Good Luck!

Has mine re-done at a local shop, took only about 3 hours one day. You can do it yourself, one trick to getting it out of the car, is lower the two front seats back and recline them completely. Searching the forum archives will give you some results feedback.

Just did this myself this past week. If its an option, start off with a headliner from a v8. they are fiberglass reinforced cardboard, and hold up much better than the type44 headliners

Default head liner

A few years back, I used paper fastners to reattach the head liner over my back seat. Paper fastners are brass colored, push them into the head liner, and their two "legs" spread out to reattach the head liner. They are sold at office supply stores like Staples or Office Depot. They don't look bad installed, and create a permanent fix. A whole lot easier then removing the head liner, and reinstalling.

Yes, paper fastners exactly like what is pictured. The little "legs" spread out upon insertion into the head liner, and hold the sagging top up great. It is a quick simple permanent fix. They work great. No one ever gets into my car and asks what they are. When the head liner is fastened in place, no one ever mentions anything about the head liner. It is only when it is sagging down that people notice the problem.

Default Perfect, thanks for the tip!

The rear of my Avant headliner is starting to go, I'll be using this trick for sure!

Default I've got some headliner removal questions

The fabric on my 91 200q20v's headliner had sagged many times. I glued it back only to have it sag in a week or two. A few days ago I just got fed up and tore the fabric off the headliner. Now I'd like to remove the headliner and properly cover it [no more padded fabric though, the paint suggestion sounds good, maybe faux carbon fiber, maybe just black paint]. I've read the posts and looked through Bentley.

It seems to me that I don't need to remove the entire sunroof. It looks that if I were to bend the clips back that hold the trim around the opening and remove that trim that would free the liner. It appears that I don't need to remove the C pillar or the back seat only the A and B pillars. I've removed the handles above each door and the lights, I've got the sun visors off but, I'm having a hard time getting the cover off the inner, clip part of the sunvisors so I may get at the screws. I take it the liner is partly glued to the roof.

Any comments about the above paragraph would be, as always, greatly appreciated!
