any way to remove/replace the glass on the side mirror without taking off the whole assembly?

Default Someone told me they 'pop' off... haven't been to the wrecker to try yet.

Mine are too nice to try with.

I installed curved glass to replace the flat glass on the passenger side. On the bottom, there is an access hole. Shine a light into it to see the white plastic slide lock mechanism that holds the glass in place. You'll then want to use a small flathead screwdriver to push the slide to one side (I believe it moves "away" from the body, but it has been years since I did this). The mirror will just pop off.

Having said that, if it has been a while since it last moved, the mechanism may be a bit recalcitrant. Keep trying, it does work. I'd then clean up everything before replacing.

Default Two methods were used to fasten mirror glass

865ks described one method, which was used on the later cars.

Earlier cars had a white plastic ring of about two inches diameter, which could rotate about 20 degrees. The ring has a few cutouts which hook on stud heads within the mirror casing. To rremove and replace the mirror, you must use a screwdriver or similar tool to rotate this plastic ring.

As others have said, use a bright flashlight from beneath the mirror housing and peek upward through the small hole (maybe 1/4 inch dia) on the underside of the mirror casing.

You'll find that there's an electric heating element that's bonded to the back of the mirror, with two wires with push-on blade connectors; you'll need to detach these.

It might be a good idea to practice on a junked car in a yard first.

Default Very simple

just insert the screwdriver in to the hole and push the plastic ring anti clockwise, easiest fix on the car.

If you have heating elements just disconnect and clean contacts before replacing.

Default Ah-ha!...

OK.. tried the slide/lock/white plastic rotating thing... Practiced on a spare mirror I found. Looking through the bottom hole you will see several notches. Use them to pry and turn the ring. When rotated the mirror will indeed become lose and fall away leaving only the heating element wires to detach.

After practicing I tried the same method on the scrapped avant (nice mirrors)... but... what the!!!!... no notches!?!

These ones do POP off. Picture and 'X' in a circle in the middle of the mirror. At each poinbt on the 'X' there is a clip that is simply pried off. Judiciously applied force will produce the required POP. Don't use a screwdriver. IMHO it will apply too much of a point load on the glass. Use something flatter and wider. I used the tool for my table saw nut. It's about an inch wide and sturdy enough to pry with. Once 3 are undone the last one can be removed by hand with little effort.

So... early 89 and prior use the rotating ring... mid '89 and later use the clip on/off method.

Default side mirror replaced...

so mine was a "pop-off", the donor was a "clip-on".
Both work perfectly with each other.

thanks for the tips boys.
