My 1989 Audi 200 takes its time starting. The cranking is about four seconds before the engine finally starts. Any sugestions?

Default Re: Slow start

I would guess a loss in fuel pressure......

is it a warm or cold start issue?
if it is just cold than I would supsect maybe the cold start valve (it is an extra injector that provides extra fuel for cold starting when fuel enrichment is needed most)

try putting a fuse in the top of the fuel pump relay (with engine off), this is to cylcle the fuel pump on. you will hear the fuel pump come on. let the pump run a few seconds and then pull the fuse out and try to start the car. if it starts right up fuel is your problem. I would do this on the first start of the day.

If fuel pressure is leaking somewhere i would suspect either the injectors or the fuel pump check valve.

Boy I'm being quite the post ***** today hey guys? lol

It really doesn't matter what temperature it is. It does it whether it is cold or hot outside. One thing I noticed is that if I shut it off and start it right away, it will start without hesitating. The longer I take to restart, the longer it takes on cranking.

Default Hot or cold is if the engine is hot after being run recently- or not

If the problem is when the engine is still warm from being run recently then suspect leaky injectors.

If it only happens when engine is cold then it could be the fuel pressure check valve back at the fuel pump not holding pressure or a problem with your cold start injector of the temp sensor that is used to tell the cold start injector to operate.

Could be other things but these are a place to start.

Default Check injectors first...

then check valve at fuel pump.

Most likely it's teh injectors.
