Strange check engine light

Now for the last three times I've been on the highway, after my car gets good and warm, my check engine light goes off at 3k or about 71-72mph. The timing gets retarded and I back off. But once I get out of the car for a minute and give it time to cool down, it won't do it for the rest of the night even once it warms up again. What are some possibly culprits?

Pull over, keep the engine running, and pull ECU fault codes. A fault code(s) will point you in the right direction; until then you're just guessing.
Maybe the intake air temperature sensor's output is out of range?
Follow procedure outlined here:<ul><li><a href="http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/trouble2.html">http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/trouble2.html</a</li></ul>

i had the same problem but it was my air temp sensor, i thought it was the knock sensor but my c e l came on nomatter hot or cold above or below 3k rpm. on sjm it says knock sensor will sense knock only if the cars warm to a certain temp. and only after 3 grand because thats where they become most damaging
