Went to Florida about a month ago, car ran great travelling 1400 miles round trip. Paced a new Passat on a deserted stretch of the (boring) Florida turnpike at 110 mph for a bit, lots o' fun and the car ran great.
After I came back the driver's side rotor would shimmy big time after a few hard stops, so I pulled the wheel today to see what was hanging up and causing the rotor to warp.
Turns out one of the guide pins had seized up on the driver's side caliper carrier, causing the pad to rub/drag on the rotor & warping it. Guess I didn't work enough lube down into the slide last time I did the brakes, so this time I cleaned 'em up nicely and instead of sliding it in, I spun it like a screw to distribute the caliper grease. Still had to replace the ATE Powerdisk on that side as they had been turned once already.
Moral of the story: a tube of caliper grease is a heck of a lot cheaper than a rotor.
