Default After reading the rest of these posts...

I agree... LOVE it or sell it... or strictly winter beater it. The 44 is fun when tweaked and running well. They are old and parts will fail... these are facts. I agree with another statement made here that every car costs money... but it is whether you LOVE your car or not that will determine if the money required bothers you.

Personally... I'd spend anything on an early Porsche 911S to keep it running. I truly LOVE those cars. I hope to even be able to buy mine back again at some point. The long term plan is to relegate FrankenAudi or her replacement to winter driving.

One other perspective... once you have repaired things on an old car you know what parts are good and what are likely to fail. Some you can expect to fail again and you can prepare for this eventuality.

I don't think anyone here is going to "convince" you otherwise. It's your call bud.

Default Re: Sorry, but I can't muster the faith to convince you.

Agreed with Will, if you need a reliable car to get to work or school then a 17 year old Audi should not be your only car.

But if you enjoy working on cars and have the time to do the work yourself then an older car will fit the bill.

Default Look at it the way i do:

How much would you sell your car for? $2000 therabouts. Well, what other car can you get for that kind of money? Just another neglected, beat down car that is going to break on you. If you spend $5000 and get a slightly better car, great, but it will still break, plus that is $3000 that you could have set aside for when the Audi broke, that is a lot of parts and mods. This is just the way i look at it, it's cheaper just to keep it. Any new car you plan on making payments on is going to cost at least $250-300 per month, plus the higher insurance, that is a lot more than you are paying for that 5000. I plan on keeping my car until it dies, because for what i could sell it for, i couldn't get another car that i like.

Default Got a Toyota, kept the Audi for my Daughter. Stranded her Sunday.

I gave her the keys with her learners permit. It's had a hard life since, but has needed little attention. The drive flange bolts fell off one axle years ago, and the alternator died on her way to college Sunday. Reliable otherwise with over 200k. You'll have trouble replacing it with anything equivalent, even newer quattros aren't equivalent IMO. You'll have to do your homework to find another vehicle as cheap to operate and still enjoyable to own. I have two '97 Landcruisers that are as well built, simpler, and very reliable, that's my replacement. Mileage sucks, but everything else is excellent.

Default As, Shavedquattro said.....

The car is unreiable, umpractical, and expensive, but it all about the feeling you get when you get into the drivers seat, and you're taking those corners, and you fell the car sticking and hugging the corners thast whats its about, the Audi I have now is reaching 400,000 km but I still keept it.
