Default Wider IS better, but...

...only if that tire stays flat to the road during hard cornering. The type 44 is so camber-challenged that you could probably run 185s without losing much cornering ability. However, this is not practical and would negatively affect your braking performance.

For ultimate handling, you need to get replacement control arms for the front (contact Ned at Intended Acceleration) to induce up to -3 degrees neg camber. However, this isn't practical for regular street driving as you'll wear out the insides of your tires.

If you want to start talking about wheel/tire weight, you're really refering to Polar Moments of Inerita, or rotational mass. The important thing here is to remember that the physics formulas use R*R (radius squared), so weight toward the outside of the wheel is what increases the polars and kills acceleration/braking ability. The effect is quite significant. Even so much that, a heavy steel 15" wheel will likely have a lower PMI rating than a 16" light allow wheel. This even though the alloy wheel is lighter than the steel.

(Having said that, most cars look better with bigger wheels and lower profile tires. That's why I have 17" wheels for street and 15" wheels for racing.)

So, for optimum acceleration, most cars do better with a smaller diameter wheel and low profile tire. This also lowers your car, which lowers both your centre of gravity and your vehicle roll-centres, and it also gives better final drive ratio for accleration. However, it will negatively affect top speed.

Default Re: 205/55/15 won't hurt anything ...

205/55 will just make your speedo off a bit, couple percent.

A friend has them, and they seemed to wear ok so far. As far as them lasting, it depends on how you drive.

Yeah, you're right "Sport Veloce". It's been a while since I had them. Now running the Michelins.

What have you heard bad about P6000's?

I had no problem with them, except one of the three sets I had only gave me about 19K miles, the other two ran over 30K, but NTB gave me an adjustment on the 19K set.

Default Re: P6000 ...

Most likely you didn't have the P6000 SportVeloce. The are a new addition to the Pirreli line.

I've heard from many people that the "original" P6000 were VERY good tires - just like you told me.
However, many people also told me that the new P6000 are very bad compared to the older/"original" P6000s.
Go figure which is the "old" and which is the new P6000. I'm compltely confused and no one seems to know.

Anyway, P6000 come stock on many brand new Audi's.
I checked the Wheel and Tire forum and they read that a lot of Audi owners said that they HATE their P6000. So this scared me away. I'm still wondering if they had the "new" P6000 or the Sport Veloce or the ones that you had.
It is a real mess ... i tell you!

Default Re: I checked them out ... GOOD tires

The last set of Coopers were 75 a piece (mounted and balanced) but good long life, quite and great snow traction. Check the website and they have a dealer list.

Default Re: what about size?... Try 215/60/15...

I almost bought my last set at the 215/60/15 size. Choose not to to make sure they don't rub the suspension on my 92 100.

The acceptable tire sizes are generally on the back side of the gas door. Mine had 195/65/15, 205/60/15 and 215/60/15.

Default Re: Thanks Stephen...

I think the HTR 200's grip decent and ride nice but they are not a race tire and you will get some/alot sidewall flex.

You're choice is going to depend on what you're going to use the tires for...?

I must agree with the Kumho and Falken suggestions also. I've heard good things about both of those tires...

Good luck Dan.

Default Concur on Azenis's...

I've got Azenis's on my 200 now and they are a great performance tire. If you are looking for longer lasting, the Kuhmo Ecstas are good, but I'd recommend the Sumitomo HTRZIIs. I have them on my A6 and have been impressed with their performance/cost.
