Default Timing Belt 1986 Audi 5000S

My 1986 Audi 5000S broke its timing belt going 70 on the interstate. I have been trying to find a Haynes manual or Bentley locally but to no avail. I DID find a tech article here about how to do the timing belt on a NG 10V 5 cylinder engine. But I don't know if this is the correct engine as it shows an auxiliary radiator my car doesn't have. This is a bottom of the line model, no turbo, not quattro, no ABS. Anybody have the correct instructions on how to do this? I can get a Haynes online but it will probably be a week to 10 days before I get it, and I need to get this car fixed! Help!!

Very similar proceedure. NG is installed in the CGT and 80/90.

Thanks. Do you know if this engine is an interference engine or non-interference? I get conflicting reports.

I've seen it go both ways, so basically it is close to being an interference. If you have valve float, chances are you made contact. I had a belt slip/break at an idle on the NF (newer 10v in the '87.5+ cars) with no issues at all internally.

I'll let you know how it goes. Still waiting on 95M3LTW to email me the procedure; we're going by one out of the tech articles that's close for now. Keeping my fingers crossed that the engine is OK; only has 92,000 miles on it!! (Yes, I lucked into grannies car!)

There is the NG writeup. I was going to scan the Bentley today but I didn't see your engine code listed...

This is the one we are using. New info: what actually happened is the water pump froze up (it had been leaking from the weep hole) and all the timing belt teeth were lined up on top of the water pump pulley! I am hoping I got lucky and the engine is OK; still have to get that cam pulley to finish the job. I will keep you posted.

what is wrong with the current pulley? I only had to replace one when the original one was broken in a frontal collision.

We are going to stay with the current pulley; it looks OK so I am going to use that $60 elsewhere (probably power steering; that's next!) I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes.
