I wouldn't say easy but DIY for the average wrench is very doable. I have done four of them on my cars and friend's. The special tool for holding the crank is the big issue for DIY. I know ther are alternatives but the correct tool sure helps things.

The special crank tool and a few other nice-to-have special tools can be rented from Blaufergnugen for $45 when you get the timing kit ($185) from them. Kit includes belt, water pump, idler pully, crank seal and the Blue coolant.

They hold you up for a $400 deposit on the tools but are good at crediting it back. Seem like a good group of people. Sheboygan, Wi.

You can try going to the following link

http://cartalk.cars.com/About/Garage/intro.html

Search for a car mechanic in your area that works mainly on Audi. Read the comments other customers have left. Or ask this forum for recommendation.

If you do a search on this forum we have written a book about this project. If you can't find what you need drop me a line crotext@spearnet.net and I will share my experience. You can do it yourself if you have average or better skills and tools.
Renting the tools is a saver for sure but also an expensive project. The parts are higher although of good quality. A couple of guys on here have built that tool and may be willing to rent it or loan it if you ask. there are other ways to do it however but not as simple.

You should plan on doing the water pump with the belt but the idler pulley is an option. If high mileage is a factor, then the cam and crank seals may be due for replacement as well and make the project a bit more complicated as they are tacky to remove.

Let me know if you need any more info but there is a lot on here in the archives.
