And look at this damper shock length done by GermanAutoConnection:

Whoever put in your t-belt might not have adjusted the Eccentric pulley to get the damper shock to 130-133mm. Or your belt wore out prematurely.

After changing to the new belt and adjusting the damper to 130 mm the belt was good and tight on the water pump pulley. So you may just need to turn the Eccentric pully with the pin wrench untill you measure 130-133 mm on the damper shock.

Well, while I'm honored that you think that Bruce did my timing belt job, that photo you give credit to GermanAutoConnection for is from my belt job I did on my Lago car this summer. When I saw it I thought, "awsome, nice job on the cleaning"/then it clicked.....I used the Eccentric pulley to get it @ 131.5mm and turned the motor over a bunch of times just to verify, and couldn't budge the water pump when tensioned. Not sure how you made the connection to GermanAutoConnection, but might have been that I quoted him as you should also replace the oil pump bearing/viscous fan clutch bearing as nobody usually does them, and it made my car idle quietly for the first time since 52K....Sincerely, Tom

One thing I noticed in the pics is that your dampener looks different than mine/any other V8 dampeners. I've got pics of. Notice where the top spring perch is in relation to those indents in the shock. Blau's website has a pic of the dampener. While dampener length is appropriate, I think you've got a different one in there,. I've got 4 V8Q cars in my possession, and none have a dampener that look like that. Maybe that blue spring is that DTM one that all of us wanted to get, but couldn't? Anyway, just an observation. Let's figure this out....Sincerely,Tom

Tom, sorry I gave credit to GermanAutoConnection for your t-belt. It's just so clean I thought it was them. Nice work.

I went to Germanautoconnection.com but the site is gone now. It did have a nice clean pic of a t-belt service too. But yours is better anyway.

My blue spring damper shock has a volkswagen/audi icon on it. Last T-belt service was in 1994 according to the sticker on the core support, so maybe it's original or they were still available new back then. One owner car and I just bought it. Bob

I knew there had to be a way of getting around using the cam locks, and after some thought and a little tip from another tech at my job, I managed to lock the cams by removing the valve cover and carefully clamping the cam in place, which worked very well. I put several marks to be sure i didnt loose my timing..

where are the two coolant plugs at the bottom of the block sides?? I wanna reuse my coolant so i need to find them!! thanks again!!

Finnaly got my water pump, intalled it and started the belt install, made myself a crude but functional cam sprocket holding tool and got the sprockets loose with a deadblow rubber hammer, 2-3 hits they were loose... i also made a tool to turn the eccentric pulley, once again very basic but functional, I dont need expensive tools, I just use what works and wastes the least time!

No need to remove your crank damper if the belt is new. Anyways you say your 4 allen screws are rusty, I never touched the allens, I took out the center crank bolt and the crank damper came off with the toothed crank sprocket. Crankshaft is keyed so even if you do take crank damper off for some reason, you can't mess it up it only goes on one way. Just make sure crank damper is at TDC mark when setting your t-belt tension.

You say your shock damper is like GermanAutoConnections not like mine? If you're worried about the different spring length don't be; you measure the body length to check tension like this:

I think that getting the cam sprockets loose is difficult so people skip it. I just tapped them lightly using this slide hammer and they popped of their tappered shafts:
I see green coolant, and you're gonna reuse that blue spring dampener that's most likely 20years old!.....Hope that works out for you....Tom

Hey dieseldude, Great idea with the vice grips! Crafty! I like the drill bits and steel for the pin wrench too. I'm glad you got your cams loose, you'll have a great running engine!

Blue spring is working great and the car has 225,000 miles too!

Green coolant is Peak full synthetic with "Patented aluminum protection
for aluminum engines", by the way. Works great!

The Cam sprokets came off quite easily with a rubber dead blow mallet, a few gentle but firm taps on the side of the sproket and they were loose, I guess they were still at the original 33 lbft torque so they werent jammed on.. and yes, the engine runs Very well now!!! amazing top end
