Default Timing belt tools

I have an 87 5KSQ, and the timing belt looks pretty bad.. not missing any chunks yet, but its dry and cracked. I need the two tools, one for the vibration damper and the one that holds the engine still. Anyone want to sell me these tools? if not, anyone know where I can get them cheap(er)?

Default Re: Timing belt tools

Blau rents the VAG tools (forgot price),

Autozone will rent generic types for free (leave a deposit then get deposit back when returning), can't hurt to check them out.

Zelenda Automotive sells VAG tools,
check them out 1-888-892-8348 - www.zelenda.com

Default Thank you I think...

...I will go with the Autozone one.... What do you call the tool that holds the camshaft at TDC?I think I can use a breaker bar rather than a $139 wrench...

Default You are refering to Audi tool 2084, aka the counter holder or the vibration damper locking tool.

in lieu of the tool, there have been some nifty creative ideas posted here to hold the crank while you try to break the torque on the crank bolt.
Pull the plug on #1 and stuff the cyl with nylon cord, another is to wind a cord in the crank pulley real tight (sorta like the way an old lawn mower was started) then tie down the other end real good.

Default I've done it with the nylon cord down number 1

The (strong) nylon rope arond the dampner sounds good to me too. You are going to need a length of pipe on the breaker bar.

Default Nylon will stretch

If you wrap the crank pulley, find a sailboat guy and ask him for a hunk from an old halyard. It's not made of nylon, but may include polyester or other exotic stuff like kevlar. (this is not the yellow poly stuff that you find at home depot). Simply put, most halyards, even retired ones, don't stretch. The halyards are used to raise the sails and typically on a 30 ft boat take loads of 4000-5000 lbs on a 7/16 line. Bigger boats will have thicker line.
