Too much oil?

I have a 1991 V8. I recently had a valve job. The car runs like it used to now, but sometimes under heavy acceleration I see clouds of smoke coming out the exhaust.
I noticed on my invoice a charge for 10 quarts of oil. The capacity is 8.5 quarts. Could this smoking problem be related to an overfill?
Thanks if anyone knows.

Mostly white smoke, could be some blue. I've only been using the car at night for the last few weeks, so the smoke surprised me in the daylight.
The oil level is full, which is a little strange since you need to add oil fairly frequently. The manual tells you to expect that.
I just idled the car in the driveway and it left a black stain on the gravel below the tail pipes.

Well...you could attribute the black soot on the driveway to the car being rich if it was started cold. White smoke...should be a bit if the outside temp is cold due to condensation in the exhaust. this would clear up quite rapidlt though. white and blue...continiously coming from exhaust regardless of outside temp/engine temp is usually a sign of coolant present in the combustion chambers(ie, bad head gasket, cracked cyl head). I suggest you get that thing back to the shop STAT!

Coolant is about halfway down the reserve tank...was full when I got the car back from mechanic three weeks ago.
Thanks for you help, Q.
What do you think about overfilling the oil? Is that a big deal?

crank already hits the oil, splash lubrication. I overfill the CQ by 0.5qt for autocross to help with oil starvation induced lifter ticking (but no more than 0.5, and it really does help). No ill effects yet (I do the same if I know I'm going to run the pee outta it "on the street").

overfilled 1.5 quarts as he stated the crank's going to really be "splashing" it up...
We both know that oil in a frothy, creamy state will not be as good of a lubricant as in it's fluid form...
Oil pumps like to pump fluid. Not airated foam...
IMHO...
