on an 88 5000 does anyone know if i need the 5 wire to 4 wire adapter? or do i just wire up the 4 wires?

You are going to need the adaptor. Tail and brake lights are 12 V so no difference when brake lights are lit. Adapter drops tails to about 8 V and then boosts to 12 V when brakes are on.

been towing for years with my 5k. when i plug in the regular 4 wire trailer adapt and step on the brakes, the "light bulb" symbol pops up on the dash. no big deal. when i am done trailering and disconnect, the light doesn't come on again.

You still don't get brake lights brighter than tails w/o the adapter.
