How hard is it and how much would it cost to drop a new/rebuilt/used working transmission into an 87 5000CS Quattro Turbo. I found one for sale that needs a tranny, just curious as to what I'd be getting into.

Just like any other tranny: You disconnect the front axles, propeller shaft to the rear, shift linkage, clutch hydraulics and wiring.

Of course, you have to get the exhaust out of the way, provide a means to support the engine and have a way to lower/raise the transmission. It's possible to do on your back with the car on jackstands, especially if you can benchpress a couple hundred pounds, but a hoist and tranny lift make it much easier. You probably can find a used tranny for a $200 or so.
