1990 Audi V8.. Just put back on the road. Noticed the tranny is shifting real hard from 3 to 4. It's like it just slams into gear.. Other shifts are firm as well, but the 3 - 4 shift seems too hard.. Are there adjustments for this or do I require an overhaul?
Is there a way to disable the auto antitheft system? Got "stranded" last night after getting gas. Car wouldn't start although it cranked fine. No spark. After 45 mins of checking things and pondering, I gave up, pushed to side, locked with key and heard a wierd noise from the trunk area. Unlocked got back in and it started right up.. I am without an owners manual so I am learning as I go..
I have a service warning that looks like a brake or antilick symbol that shows up in the center of the dash on the graphic display. Is there a way to clear this code? I have checked out the brakes and wiring and all seems well.
Also, anyone have the part number for the transmission dipstick?

Dipstick Audi Number 018-321-431-D around $20.00
For the harsh shift I would get the transmission flushed first before doing anything else, especially if the car has been sitting for a long period of time.
For the alarm light it sound as though your front brakes wear sensor circuit is open. Jack the car up remove the wheels and remove the wire connector at the brake wear sensor. To test use a jumper and jump the connector.

Thanks for the info.. I will order a dipstick tomorrow..
What type of tranny fluid is recommended? Dextron II? Shall I change the filter? Is the tranny hard to remove? Can I just remove the rear drive shaft and trans and leave the front bell housing in place?
Anyone recommend transmission additives?

Called Audi, that part number is for just the dipstick tube.. The part number they have for the dip stick was 018321431D. They tell me this part is no longer available and was listed as an accessory..
Any ideas where I may obtain one?
