Default My money is on the gas tank liner peeling away and clogging the screen on the fuel pump...

Common problem on these cars.

Or your fuel pump relay is heating up.

What is reading on the temp gauge when this happens?

Also, is it like hitting a brick wall? Or does it do the 'stumble stumble stumble die' thing?

How long has it been doing this?

Is the gas in the tank new?

Have you bought your parents a Christmas gift yet?

Default Sounds like the fuel pump is failing.

I recently encountered similar but less frequent unexplained loud fuel pump hum for about 30 seconds, followed by the engine dying.

I have no idea of the age of the fuel pump, but suspect that it may have been the one that was fitted to the car when it was built.

I replaced the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay and the problem has disappeared. While we had the old pump out, Tom Serrago and I examined the interior of the tank with a flashlight and, contrary to our expectations, there was no sign of the fuel tank lining disintegrating.

YMMV.
