Default SWEET! I might be needing one...how much? email me.

I am gonna swap the juice out this weekend and if the system doesn't operate properly, I'll need a pump. I don't see any evidence that the rack is leaking or causing problems. Looks like a recent 1-2 year old, swap anyway. Pump looks OOOOOOLLLLLDDDD.

Default Quick check on the rack...

Up against the firewall on both sides of the rack are rubber bellows. Gram em with your hand and feel them. If you feel liquid sloshing about then you will almost surely be in for a rack soon.

I recommend you do not replace the pump just because the system isn't working right. Something else could be the culprit such as the hoses.

If the 89 100 hydraulic system is the same as my 88 5000 then this is what needs to be done to test the pump. Below the brake master cylinder is a port where you can connect a hydraulic pressure gauge which should be able to read till 2500 psi. Start the car and let it idle, depress the brake pedal and you should see the hydraulic pressure drop to about 1000 psi. After releasing the brake pedal, if the hydraulic pressure rises right away to between 2100 and 2450 psi then your pump is fine.

Refer to the Bentley manual - it is the bible of Audi ownership )

Default I agree, pump noise isn't always pump

Many times the HP noise is actually from air bubbles in the system. Make sure that's not the problem first. These can be caused by bad hoses, bad rack, old fluid, low fluid, and leaking seals/washers.

Default Great information in prev 2 posts! THANKS and a question...

Step 1. Change fluid with Audi juice.
Step 2. Check rack for leaking.
Step 3. Pressure check and diagnose
Step 4. Fix

Question: Best procedure to drain, flush and replace PS fluid?
